Phoenix, AZ – Financial abuse is the silent weapon found in 99 percent of all domestic violence cases. The abuser can limit access to money or credits cards, tightly monitor spending, or prohibit their partner from working to control and manipulate their lives.
Women’s financial empowerment is the linchpin to reclaim their independence – financially, physically and emotionally. To continue to provide financial empowerment services to survivors of domestic violence in the Valley, The Allstate Foundation donated a $50,000 grant to The Fresh Start Women’s Foundation.
The grant funds the Purple Purse Moving Ahead Through Financial Empowerment curriculum, which is designed to help survivors understand financial abuse, protect their money and assets, and establish financial stability.
“We have seen such a positive response from our clients that have participated in this program,” Fresh Start’s Social Work and Special Projects Senior Manager Rebecca Christ said. “Financial abuse is often overlooked when addressing domestic violence, and The Allstate Foundation’s support allows us to take our programs – and ultimately women’s lives – to the next level.”
Allstate’s curriculum enhances Fresh Start’s existing resources, while focusing on the specific needs of women fleeing their situation and looking to get back on their feet.
“One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and Allstate is dedicated to empowering women to achieve financial freedom,” Allstate Southwest Field Senior Vice President Vicki Adamczyk said. “Together, we can make a positive impact on women’s lives and in our community.”
Allstate Foundation Purple Purse is a public education and fundraising program aimed at raising awareness of the prevalence of financial abuse in domestic violence cases and the need for resources to help survivors.
“Our goal is to empower women to overcome life’s hurdles and reach sustainable self-sufficiency through career and educational advancement,” Christ said.
The Fresh Start Women’s Resource Center offers a wide breadth of programs and services, including career readiness, family law support, social work services, domestic violence support, scholarships, mentoring, computer skills training, professional clothing, and financial coaching, as well as job placement services through the onsite Goodwill Career Center.
